Tidlig sommer. I en landsby i Nord-Tyrkia går Lale og hennes fire søstre hjem fra skolen mens de leker uskyldige leker med noen gutter. Denne uskyldige leken får uventede konsekvenser.

Etter at foreldrene deres døde, vokste de fem søstrene opp hos bestemoren til en generasjonskonflikt om moral bringer patriarkatet tilbake til familiens hus. Familien er livredd for at jentene skal bringe skam over dem, og forvandler følgelig hjemmet til et fengsel for jentene. Skolegang erstattes med hjemmeundervisning i hvordan man skal være husmor og arrangerte ekteskap. De fem søstrene drømmer om å vende tilbake til friheten fra tidligere dager og finner hele tiden måter å omgå begrensningene som settes for dem.

Den tyrkisk-franske regissøren Deniz Gamze Ergüvens debutfilm handler om unge kvinners rett til å kontrollere sine egne liv, kropper og seksualitet. Filmens utforsking av menns autoritet over kvinners bevegelse og seksualitet minner om The Silences of the Palace (Moufida Tlati, 1994), The Apple (Samira Makhmalbaf, 1998), og Dogtooth (Yorgos Lanthimos, 2009). Opprøret til den yngste søsteren inkluderer et gledesfylt øyeblikk som hyller Jafar Panahis Offside (2006).

Five sisters' fight against forced marriage

Early summer. In a village in northern Turkey, Lale and her four sisters walk home from school while playing innocently with some boys. This innocent game has unexpected consequences.

After their parents died, the five sisters grew up with their grandmother until a generational conflict of morals brings patriarchy back to the family house. The family is terrified that the girls will bring shame on them, and consequently transforms the home into a prison for the girls. School is replaced by homeschooling lessons on how to be a housewife and arranged marriages. The five sisters dream of returning to the freedom of earlier days and constantly find ways around the limitations that are set for them.

Turkish-French director Deniz Gamze Ergüven's debut feature deals with the right of young women to control their lives, their bodies and their sexuality. The film's exploration of men's authority over women's movement and sexuality recalls The Silences of the Palace (Moufida Tlati, 1994), The Apple (Samira Makhmalbaf, 1998), and Dogtooth (Yorgos Lanthimos, 2009). The rebellion of the youngest sister includes a joyful moment paying homage to Jafar Panahi's Offside (2006).

Mustang was nominated for an Oscar in the category for Best Foreign Film and won several awards on the international film festival circuit.
